It is a known fact that every Victorian muse keeps an intimate diary.

For instance: today she awoke to the faint clatter of spoons in the breakfast hall and declared, quite firmly, that she would not wear the green satin again (not after what happened last Thursday). Instead, she chose the rose-trimmed bodice and wandered the castle gardens pretending to be lost, just in case anyone heroic happened by.

No one did.

So she sat beneath the linden tree and wrote a poem about bees.

Later, she reorganized her ribbon boxes by emotional significance, and after tea, practiced her signature in the mirror until it looked slightly more poetic. The day ended with a blush-worthy compliment from the stable boy and a vow to write of it later—perhaps in code.

Because really—what is the point of keeping a diary if no one believes it holds secrets?

But this page is only the beginning.

The Reading is the first in an ongoing trilogy that follows our muse as she reflects on the quiet chapters of her life—romantic, mischievous, and deeply human. As she reads her diary by candlelight, long-lost memories unfold before us: a hidden romance, a haunting melody, and the tender ache of remembering. Each piece in this series captures a fragment of her story, frozen in elegance and emotion.

This piece also honors the enduring beauty and influence of the Victorian age—a turning point in art, culture, and human imagination. As industrial progress surged forward, artists and thinkers turned inward, exploring symbolism, mysticism, romanticism, and the emotional depths of the human spirit. It was an era of contrasts: invention and nostalgia, spiritual yearning and scientific discovery. From that tension emerged a visual language that was ornate, introspective, and layered with hidden meaning—one that continues to shape fashion, fantasy, and fine art to this day.
